October/November update

I’ve been super busy since mid Ocotober getting a heap of art ready for a bunch of shows. I’ve not exhibited anything all year, but just managed to show at 4 exhibitions in as many weeks. The first one was held down on the Gold Coast at Sneak and Destroy’s annual One Offs show, at Comb Gallery/Neverland Bar. It was in a pretty rad little space out the front of Neverland and there was a really great turn out. We only got down there for a short visit but it was great to catch up with a heap of mates and check out some impressive works, with all artists starting out with a blank pair of Vans.

The next week Red Bull and Laced organised the awesome “Mo Munny Mo Problems” show in the alley behind Laruche in the valley. The talent was amazing, such a great array of artists and heaps of crazy ideas. You can check out a heap of pics the boys from Project 4000 took here, and a sweet vid of the night is up on Vimeo.

Then the very next night we headed back down to the Goldie for The 360 Project’s One x One x One show. Again there was a really impressive range of ideas on display across a bunch of skate decks. I also did some live drawing on the night with a couple mates, Josh KID9 Thorsen and Ryan RyRy Parsons.

I had heaps of fun painting my deck for the One x One x One show, so I was pretty stoked to be invited to paint another for the Board show which is currently on until the start of February at the National Gallery of Victoria. From the photos I’ve seen so far, it looks like another great show the girls from Just Another Agency have organised, and I’m keen to get down there and check it out. And if that wasn’t enough hands on art for one month, I got commissioned to paint up one of Kid Robot’s Krackas. I’m really happy with how he turned out, hope he likes his new home. I’ll post up some pics of him soon (though theres a lil sneak preview of him if you go digging through my SQUIDTANK account on Instagram)!

Last weekend I was doing some sketching out on the balcony, enjoying an awesome spring day, thinking about making a time lapse video of me drawing one of my characters, from sketching the original concept through to colouring the final piece in Photoshop. I got thinking “hmmm, my hands look kinda boring, what could I do to make them more interesting?” So I headed into the kitchen and did this ….

Well, maybe thats not exactly how it went down. Instead I was turning over a croissant I had under the grill and banged my finger into the element! I was pretty freaked out at the time (the sound of searing flesh does that), but after a week of alternating between aloe vera and paw paw ointment, it looks like its healing up well. If it doesn’t make it back to the state it was originally in ….. well, chicks still dig scars don’t they?

Sad to hear Macho Man passed away in a car accident yesterday. I’ve not watched the WWF since I was a lil fella, but was a fan back in the day. Peace out big guy.

Evolution of the SQUID

Its been over 6 years since I first drew my little squid mascot and hes remained fairly unchanged. Until now that is. As I move further along the design process for my SQUIDTANK shirts, I’m finding a need for him to evolve. I’ve been pretty reluctant to change his look, though with the shirt designs and potential comic needing a more versatile character, I’m finding his current design a little too restrictive. Hard to get expressions across without any eyeballs. My dilemma is how far do I go. At the moment I’m sitting comfortably with the second option though I may need a lil of number 3 thrown in. Its going to take some experimenting to get right and I’ll need to run him through a rigorous testing routine, but I’m sure I’ll work it out.

Rest assured, he will never go as far as number 4!

Gotta make my mind up

I wanted to have a play around with my quill pens and ink again, though its been a loooong time. So long in fact the ink had separated into a solid on the bottom, and watery layer on top. I thought I might be able to bring it back with some vigorous shaking, but to no avail. I used to enjoy inking with quills so I think I’ll go pick up some new fresh ink soon.

Latest Piece – Finn’s Painting

Its been sometime since I painted anything, and even longer since I was since I was commissioned to do this piece for a friend’s son. I’d finally cleared up some time in my schedule and got to finish this one up last week. It was great fun and I really hope to do more tangible painting soon, much nicer to touch a finished piece than to stare at it on a screen.

Indian Film Festival 2011 – Bollywood and Beyond

Last month I was asked to create a 30 and 45 second commercial for the upcoming Indian Film Festival in Australia and New Zealand, and it needed to feature a lot of famous Bollywood faces. It was a fun project to work on (I find a lot of the shorter ones are) and I’m pretty happy with the results.

After months of hard work, Flick Buddies has just been released around the world for iPad and iPhone! Its a super exciting day for me and the other guys on the team, our little baby is out in the real world!
